LTC Jeffrey Fox (POW)
Shot Down, Destroyed, 19/02/91

Lt Col Jeffrey Fox POW,  from Fall River, Mass, call sign "NAIL53" injured as he ejected, captured as POW and released Mar 5, 1991.

19 February: Combat, Day 34: Lt.Col. Jeff Fox, a Forward Air Controller (FAC), was shot down in his OA-10 and captured.

Narrative: Col. Fox (callsign "Nail 53") took off from King Fahd at 0730 and went to kill box AE-5 to relieve Lt. Patrick Olson. He was getting ready to exit the area and was checking one last target with binoculars when a missile hit just aft of the cockpit. The aircraft began pitching over. Hydraulics were lost, so Fox put the aircraft in Manual Reversion mode. The aircraft continued descending and entered a spiral. Having lost all control, Fox ejected from the aircraft and safely landed in his parachute. Numerous aircraft begin speeding his direction to provide cover for a rescue. His capture by Iraqi soldiers was extremely dramatic, as he used his survival radio to narrate his own capture to the approaching A-10s. He was finally forced to drop his radio as Iraqi forces got within a few yards of him. He spent the next several weeks as a POW in Baghdad.
